Coega
The Coega designated Powerships are expected to provide 450MW of clean, reliable and affordable electricity to South Africans. This is expected to reduce loadshedding by generating electricity to power 47% of all Eastern Cape homes and businesses.
The project in Coega is also expected to create over 170 construction jobs, with at least 150 of these allocated to local community members. A further R31 million will be allocated to local skills development programs.
Richards Bay
The Richards Bay Powerships are expected to provide 450MW of clean, reliable and affordable electricity to South Africans. This is expected to reduce loadshedding by generating enough electricity to power 27% of all KZN households and businesses.
During the construction period of the project, which is estimated to last approximately one year, more than 190 construction jobs will be created. In addition, after one-year the project will go live and require more than 200 additional full-time operations and management jobs.
This is in addition to the R650 Million dedicated to socio-economic development for the life of the project in Richards Bay.
Saldanha Bay
The Saldanha Bay Powerships are expected to provide 320 MW of clean, reliable and affordable electricity to South Africans. The power is expected to reduce loadshedding by generating enough electricity to power over 200 000 homes and businesses in Saldanha Bay.
In terms of economic development, R600 Million will be dedicated to socio-economic development for the life of the project. At Saldanha Bay, community investment is driven by local needs and suggestions and we anticipate around 300 total construction jobs in Saldanha, as well as 170+ total operations and management jobs in Saldanha Bay.
The project will employ hundreds of local residents with priorities in investment and skills transfer.
Karpowership SA will invest directly in the local economy, hiring for operations and basing supply chains in the ports where the three Powerships will be moored.
We will create around 1,200 jobs through the life of the project, and we have set our plans for economic development in and around the ports – to train and upskill South Africans via both direct employment and wider local supply chains.
Karpowership SA has committed to invest at least R18 billion directly into local economies. This investment includes contributions to skills transfer and socio economic, local supplier, SME and women empowered enterprise development programmes.
